Quote1 I tell you all... your superstitions of many gods are false. There is but one God... Rao! Quote2
Jaf-El src

Jaf-El was an ancestor of Superman.

At the time of the Kryptonian deluge, Jaf-El was a prophet of the one god Rao and encouraged his worship before the biblical flood that befell Krypton. Those who worshipped what Jaf-El called "lifeless idols" demanded some kind of proof of Rao's veracity.

In what would be Jaf-El's first miracle, he told those assembled that the red sun of Krypton would turn golden. After a few incredulous seconds, it did. Jaf-El called it the work of Rao.

While the origin of the miracle was geologic; it was still miraculous that Jaf-El could know that it would happen and that it would also predict the deluge. As flood waters rose, Jaf-El lead the righteous to safety. His brother Tio-El called down the Winged Ones and, in Jaf-El's second miracle, the righteous are fed and flown to the safety of Mount Mundru.

As Prophet, Jaf-El forsaw the destruction of Krypton a millennium before it came to be. He said salvation would be found on the yellow star they called Ariu - Earth's sun Sol.

Abilities

  • Prognostication

  • This version of Jaf-El, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the Dark Crisis of 2022-2023. Even though other versions of the character may have appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
Gold volcano 001
  • Supergirl asked the obvious question: "If the sun turned yellow, why didn't the people gain superpowers?" Superman relates that a gold volcano on the opposite side of Krypton filled the upper atmosphere with gold dust and other gases which changed the apparent colour of the sun Rao, and possibly caused the torrential rains.
