Zaltar was a mentor to young Kara in Argo City, showing her the miraculous power source of the city called the Omegahedron, which he "borrowed" from the city government without their knowledge.
History
When Kara lost the Omegahedron by causing it to be sucked out into space, Zaltar took responsibility for the loss by having himself be imprisoned in the Phantom Zone. Later, when Kara as Supergirl was imprisoned in the Phantom Zone, she was rescued by a shadowy figure, who revealed himself to be Zaltar. When an opening occurred in the Phantom Zone, Kara and Zaltar attempted to escape. However, this was noticed by Selena, who sent a magic cyclone to kill Supergirl. Zaltar pushed Kara through the shrinking opening. Kara then screamed Zaltar's name in horror as she saw her mentor fall to his death in the whirlpool. Although Zaltar was dead, he spoke to her one final time during her final battle against Selena. When the evil witch had the upper hand, Zaltar telepathically said he believed in Kara and she could stop Selena.
